EDUCATION
Dr. Stephanie Michaels earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. She went on to receive her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Counseling Psychology from the University of St. Thomas. Stephanie completed her APA accredited internship at the University of Minnesota.
EXPERIENCE
Stephanie has worked in the mental health field for over 15 years. She has worked with adults in various mental health settings including substance abuse treatment, short-term crisis care, case management, college counseling, DBT programming, and outpatient therapy services.
CERTIFICATIONS
Stephanie is a licensed psychologist. She has received specialized training in anxiety related disorders, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and providing trauma-informed care.
MENTAL HEALTH APPROACH
Stephanie is grounded in a relational approach to therapy that focuses on the contexts and experiences of each client. She works to explore these compassionately with her clients in an effort to move toward acceptance and change. She believes that safety is the foundation of cultivating change and creates a collaborative and non-judgmental environment through a style that is warm, empathic, and transparent. Stephanie prioritizes flexibility in her approach to therapy to best meet the needs of her clients and draws on several therapies including Relational Cultural Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
CURRENT PRACTICE
Stephanie works with adults of all ages providing individual therapy. Her areas of interest include anxiety, trauma work, attachment, managing life changes, grief and loss, and navigating relational and social dynamics.
