EDUCATION

Dr. Nathan Koranda earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Bemidji State University. He completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree at the University of Minnesota, specializing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

EXPERIENCE

Nathan began his career as a paramedic in the Twin Cities area, gaining extensive hands-on experience in emergency medicine. As a registered nurse, he worked with adolescents in acute inpatient settings, further cultivating his skills in psychiatric care. Transitioning to his role as a nurse practitioner, Nathan has practiced in outpatient clinics, intensive outpatient programs, addiction psychiatry, correctional healthcare, and with first responders.

Beyond clinical practice, Nathan co-founded a nonprofit organization where he has led initiatives addressing first responder mental health and implementing community-led substance use disorder (SUD) initiatives in Tanzania, Kenya, and Rome. His work spans international borders, emphasizing sustainability and collaboration in mental health and addiction care.

CERTIFICATIONS

Nathan is board-certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) across the lifespan by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP), International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPN), Police, Treatment, and Community Collaborative (PTACC), and the Rome Consensus 2.0 initiative.

MENTAL HEALTH APPROACH

Nathan adopts a holistic, person-centered approach to mental health care. He believes in partnering collaboratively with patients to identify their unique needs and goals. While medications can play an important role in treatment, Nathan emphasizes that they are not the only option. When medications are considered, he guides patients through an informed decision-making process to ensure comfort and understanding. Recognizing the deeply individual nature of personal experiences, Nathan tailors his care to honor and support each patient's journey toward wellness.

CURRENT PRACTICE

Nathan provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management services. In addition to his clinical work, he is an internationally recognized speaker on topics related to first responder mental health, substance use disorders, and deflection and diversion programs. His dedication to advancing mental health care extends globally, bridging the gaps between systems and communities.
